...reflecting on the foregoing, if *everybody* in anything cultivates something in particular alone, that anything risks declining into a mere whatever so stultifying that that anything itself will wither and die. So we really must cultivate the contrary if we care about the continued life of that anything at all!

Ah, whatever, the word that can do anything by doing nothing. You talk for hours to someone who wants to vote for George Bush (this in the summer of 2004), and he even ends up admitting that most of what you say about his incompetence is true, but then ... "whatever".

To which one can only respond ... "whatever."
