A Question for you Microsoft Explorer users out there...

A question for you Microsoft Explorer browser users out there: how does this web site appear to you? Do you see the strip of posts only? Is the profile, archives, links etc. column all pushed down so that you have to scroll 'way down to the bottom to see it? I just discovered this when I looked myself up on Microsoft Explorer for the first time ever. (This after a couple of friends who use Explorer complained being unable to see my blogroll, or of finding the title with a black hole beneath.)

In Mozilla Firefox and Netscape, this blog looks like it should. Only in Explorer does it have problems. (So too do my other black blogs, Undressing the Night and Sky of Ink.) Going around my blogroll I noticed a number of other blogs using Minima Black have the same problem in Explorer only -- Lorna, you have problems, and so do you, Gina, and yet two others using Minima Black, namely you, Todd, and you, Laurel, look normal in Explorer. Is this my computer? Is there something I can do (i.e. with html) to rectify this? (I asked Blogger for help but no answers have been forthcoming.) Oddly enough, Geof Huth, who uses a template that is usually not affected, also looks bad in Explorer.

For those 50+% of my readers who still use that clunky old (and probably unsafe) Explorer browser, I urge you to stop patronizing Mr. Gates immediately and download Mozilla Firefox, the most accurate and easy-to-use browser I've found yet. But as long as you comprise my majority, this situation just bugs me.

Brian,

The problem is much more complicated than the browser someone's using. I check my blog regularly on three computers, all using IE as the browser, and none of them show the problem you're seeing. (Browser and monitor settings have something to do with this problem, and that's why I haven't worried about it much. I figured it was insoluble in the absolute.)

For instance, "Out of the Woodwork" does have the problem on my computer, and so does "Undressing the Night," but "Sky of Ink" does not. And my results for problems with other people's blogs is different from yours as well. Gina and Laurel's blogs look fine, but Lorna's and Todd's do not.

I've occasionally had this problem with my blog (from my computer screen point of view), but I've fixed it in each case (again, only from the point of view I'm stuck with). Usually, this is caused by a single word that takes up one line and is so long it pushes against the width of the box set by the template. In such cases, I shorten the word or break it apart. It appears that Lorna's problem is caused by a couple of oversized photos posted to her blog and that Todd's is he has posted a long URL posted as eye-readable on his site.

I do agree that IE is a pathetic browser. It tends not to follow standards, and sometimes this causes me problems. I just haven't had enough problems to convince me to take the few minutes to install a replacement!

Last night I made a change in my sidebar (which I haven't checked on multiple machines yet). Because of this and your post, I might survey my readers to see how many are having problems.

Thanks

Geof

Thanks Geof. Following your advice, I was easily able to fix "Undressing the Night" -- and "Sky of Ink", I was mistaken, was OK -- but fixing "Out of the Woodwork" hasn't been obvious. Is it because any of my 150-odd posts could be causing the problem, or do you find that the problem is caused by posts on the current page only? Could my photos -- some of which go to the edge of the column -- be a cause of the problem? Thanks again for your advice.

Brian,

Glad you fixed some of the problems.

In my experience, this is a page-by-page problem, so you might not have problems on some pages.

And I'd guess it is the two wide photos on your top page that are causing the problems right now. Some negative evidence: The page for this posting alone looks just fine to me.

Brian-

I'm guessing it's a float issue. I'll see if I can come up with anything.

Geof -- the weird thing is, the link you gave me (to this post alone) had the same problem on my browser: Profile & links all the way to the bottom. So too every month in my archives, whether I had pictures or not.

However, when I have time I will try reducing the size of the pictures this month and seeing if that helps.

My profound conclusion remains: Explorer sucks eggs. A thousand thankyous for your help, but in the time you took to write this, you could have downloaded Mozilla. Bill Gates with his latest Windows registration ploys is trying to siphon yet more money from us: I urge you not to subscribe to the web-surfing mechanism of that cold-blooded leach one heartbeat longer!

Harry, I don't know what you mean by CSS. I'll check your blog, though, to see how it looks.

Cheers everyone...thanks again.

correction: patronize, not subscribe (I don't think Explorer has a subscription fee...yet...)

Brian-

I took the pics out and it was still messed up in IE. So, I don't believe that's it.

AD, how did you manage to take the pics out? Have you found a way to hack into my blogger account? Ah-ha, the hacker poet strikes again! (Actually, I still see them here, but thanks for the experiment from your end...)

Brian,

Too bad. You're wrong about Mozilla, tho (in my case alone). I downloaded and installed it twice today, and neither time could the browser connect to the Internet. Not even after I set it as my default browser and double-checked to make sure I had way beyond the minimum hardware requirements. Since IE is working fine, I think it's my best bet for now. But I might try some other browser soon.

Brian-

No hacking, I just copied the html and was fiddling around.

Your problem: You seem to have inadvertantly deleted the two closing tags for your sidebar ('sidebar' and 'sidebar2').

Your solution: Paste '</div></div>' into your template on the line right before the comment that reads '<!--End #sidebar-->'.

A.D. -- Wow! it works! Amazing!!!

So your advice combined with Geof's seems to be the solution to the problem.

Geof -- sorry to lead you down the path to the wrong garden. You know what they say about good intentions paving roads...

Hi I used to have this self same problem with our own blog and in our case it turned out to be a banner which I had posted which was a little wider than the narrow blog strip would allow. I removed the banner and all came back into line with the links and profile back up the top where it should be.

Also I was not happy with the narrow width which the standard template offered, so I went into the template settings and changed the HTML for the page width and the sidebar to a little more each time until I was happy with how it displayed. You have to display the template in code view to do this. I am using Internot Exploder but your site displays fine to me, you must have fixed the problem already!

I use FF M but I can't read white on black. It makes me go blind. That's just me.

Black on glaring white white white makes me go blind. My eyes actually actually find relief in this reverse colour scheme. I guess that's just me...

I just have to say it...
I read all these comments with increasing pleasure, not only are they greatly informative, but so amusing, I am still chuckling...
Thank you Brian
